I had a disagreement with a fellow player on how spells are gained each level.

I understand that spells have to be found (like on scrolls, at magic shops for lower level, etc)

But the way I read the rules is:

Upon obtaining a new level, the mage is able to learn that level in NEW spells. So when a wizard moves from, say, 3rd level to 4th level he may opt to:

1. Learn a 4th level spell
2. Learn a 3rd and a 1st level spell
3. Learn two 2nd level spells
4. Learn four 1st level spells.
(all providing he has the scrolls or access to a wizard's shop, etc).

In addition to the spells he had gained from 1, 2 and 3rd levels.

You're right, he's wrong.

We took great care when translating that particular part of the rules - what is his misunderstanding?

I didn't understand him very much but he thought it was your current level in TOTAL spells. So a 4th level wizard could have perhaps 4 1st levels, or 2 2nd levels or a 3rd and 1st MAXIMUM at 4th level

By my math, a 4th level would have

1. The first spell he got at character creation
2. At 2nd level he could get a 2nd level or two first level in addition to his first spell
3. At 3rd level he could get a 3rd, or a 2nd and a 1st, or 3 firsts.
and so on.  So he could have quite a few spells to pick from at 4th level, depending on availability.

One could have described the whole process of gaining new spells as a point-buy system, similar to progress points and all misconceptions would have been ruled out. But you know how it is - make something foolproof and nature makes a better fool.

When you do it the way the player understands it, you may only learn lvl. 1 skills (1 per level you gain) or you have to wait until you are at high level to get one high level spell. This would not make any sence and the wizzard would be a totally weak character.

Hmm ... is there a disagreement? In the rules, you find a description on what the charakter is able to learn. But he has still to find the spells in books, on scrolls, at magic shops.

@dextolen: I sincerely would recommend to you to allow each spellcaster to learn at least 1 spell per level-up for free. If you're not a GM who lets foes drop a crazy amount of scrolls in the first levels, spellcaster players will quickly realize how accessing new spells is a pain in the ass. It is really no fun if the GM does not include A LOT of opportunities where you can find / learn new spells

I am allowing spells up to level 5 to be found in any major city for sale.  There are always many scrolls in DS adventures, too!

Scrolls are always a better treasure than gold - magic-users can learn them and/or the rest of the party can sell them (=gold).

Finding enough magic scrolls also seems to be important for game balancing to work, it seems to me.
