Holding or Grappling?
« am: 14. November 2013, 17:23:30 »

Are their any rules for grappling or holding?

It came up yesterday in a game and I just used a MAT attack to initiate grapple. Defender defends at +5 (because attacker is unarmed).
If attack does 'damage' - damage is negated but grapple is started.

Next turn (attacker or defender), contested BOD+ST.  If attacker wins, still held.  If defender wins, breaks free of grapple.

While grappled, defender is -2 (additional -2 / size category smaller than attacker)  on all checks attempted and cannot move.

An attacker cannot grapple a target +1 size category larger than himself.   While grappling, an attacker cannot perform other actions, but may 'squeeze' the defender for 3 points defendable damage/ round.

Might be too weak. However, I like your idea of how grapple is initiated. I would suggest this tweak:

Attacker attacks unarmed (+5 Def). If 'damage' then no damage, but target is grappled.
Both grappler and grappled target may not take any actions during their turn other than the following:

Target: BOD+ST contest against grappler once per turn. If success, target may take normal action this turn.
Grappler: BOD+ST contest against target once per turn. If success, deal damage equal to difference (no defense).

Of course, both grappler and target are considered to be in melee combat for any purposes (i.e. shooting into melee, SP etc.)

Starting Grapple

Zitat
Defender defends at +5 (because attacker is unarmed).
If attack does 'damage' - damage is negated but grapple is started.

I dont think, the target should defend against grapple with the normal defense-stat. This stat consists of Body, Stamina (i hope this is the rigt term in the english version) and armor. This helps against injuries, but it does not affekt the chances of getting hold by someone.

The defense against this particular maneuver should be something using agility.

I had the same case this week, and no time to look up rules.
What I came up with on the spot was the following:

Normal Attack roll (no defence and no damage). If sucessfull attacker can get a hold when comparing Agi+Movement/ Body+Strength Contest (use the one higer for each opponent) is won.

To continue the Contest every Round and deal damage according to difference is a good idea. I will use this when the situation comes up again.

I like this version.

Maybe the initial attack roll could be modified by the targets agi or better half agi. Because of it is easier to get away from a bear-hug, than to dodge a sword. Or in other words because the attacker is unarmed.

I like it if the players come up with other Solutions than "I hit him" ... so I prefer not to give a modification. Unarmed attack is also without modification. And if you get the hold is decided by the contest. It makes for more fun if the players can let their imagination run and try some wild manouvres without too many mali...

But I think it would be fair to give an malus. Would use move then, not agi/2, as this is a less uses attribute, that should see some use ;)

Uhm, I see my players trying to grapple a Dragon....

For different size categories, the size +2 bonus should be ignored or even reversed (-2 to grapple for each size category)? Or directly not allowing them to grapple something of a bigger size category?

For the dragon, I'd rule it is impossible to grapple, but the hero may try to grab on to perhaps attack at a bonus (after a BOD+ST checks to hold on!)

like clinging to the back of the creature to attack with a +2 bonus (from behind)? makes sense.

Could someone of you write a final, clean ruling in here? This would help. Thanks. I somehow lost track of the discussion.
